I’ve made a small program that can be used to upload your own.hex files to arduino boards using the bootloader. That means you don’t need a flash programmer. I made it for my own use and found it pretty useful. So now I’ve made a more user friendly version. To use it compile you’re code in something like AvrStudio. Then simply start XLoader.exe, pick a hex file and press upload. Good news it now also supports Arduino Uno.

Hope you find it useful Please contact me about bugs or suggestions. Don’t know hat I did but I got uno to load the test file from the Arduino examples but I still cannot get he steppers to run. The pulse trains all appear to be in phase on the four stepper wires and when I inserted a green circuit board driver on the shield the signal were still all in phase but this time the pulses were inverted. The steppers run fine with my test circuit and I can see the phase shift in the signals on the scope. So My question needs two answers one about the signals and the other of why the green board driver have inverted signals. Hello, thanks for providing this tool! Unfortunately I have difficulties with it loading a hex file onto the UNO.
It is a often used and gbrl.hex and from where I got it XLoader is recommended so I assume the file itself works and also in combination with the XLOADER. Drivers (CH341) are installed properly, device is recognized correctly and settings also (atmega328). In general I would say the communication works because with the Arduino IDE I can transfer the “blink” scetch.
Once I press the upload button of the XLOADER the LEDs start blinking and after a short while it just says “0 bytes uploaded” nothing else. I dunno what to do or where to start.
Does anyone can provide help? Thanks a lot!
Nice idea, but needs some improvements 1) The loader hangs if you attempt to load on the wrong port. Afterwards the only way I could shut down XLoader was to unplug the Arduino, as the Task Mgr reported the program is no longer responding. A fail safe loop counter would prevent it hanging forever waiting for the port response (i.e., a timeout). It’s always a good idea to write “no hang” code, instead of assuming. 2)When a load fails there is no indication as to why?
I can see the hex file uploading, but at the end XLoader simply reports “Upload failed” and I get a red blinky on the Arduino? What you published was actually very logical. But, think about this, suppose you were to write a killer headline? I ain’t saying your information isn’t good, however what if you added a post title that makes people want more?
I mean XLoader is kinda boring. You ought to peek at Yahoo’s front page and see how they create post titles to get people interested. You might add a related video or a related pic or two to get readers interested about everything’ve written. In my opinion, it could make your website a little bit more interesting. I downloaded Xloader and I’m trying to upgrade my Shapeoko2 from GRBL 8 to.9j.
I downloaded the hex file and put it in the Xloader screen with com3, 115,200 baud and UNO device. When I hit upload I get an error that says “unhandled exception has occurred in your application. If you click Continue, the application will ignore this error and attempt to continue. If you click Quit, the application will close immediately. The system canot find the file specified. I added the details from the error message to the end of this message. I’ve tried hitting continue and uploading with the board powered and not powered.
Xloader says its uploading but nothing is happening after several minutes. I get the same message. Can’t figure out what i’m doing wrong or if I have something set wrong on my computer. Any help/direction is appreciated. Thanks, Greg error details: See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box. Why the hell a simple GUI for avrdude needs.NET 4? Because the author has no clue how to configure Visual Studio so that it creates an exe file for.NET 2. The combo box is editable, one can type into “kghqcchkqgvw”, and into the baud rate field something similar – why? Because the author has no clue.
In the Arduino IDE, one can learn the exact command line how avrdude is to use – for every Arduino board. Why then are listed only 5 Arduino types? Right – because the author has no clue. Although the idea is good, the implementation is horrible. This is surely the first attempt of a very novice programmer. The pigs stole the princess as we know it more plague inc. I have been trying to use X Loader to program a clone board ( same as the Bascam simple BGC 2 axis board). It is BGC 3.1 MOS Large Current Two-axis Brushless Gimbal Controller with the Smallest Sensor Now this board appears to be supplied from various resellers with ver 2.2b2 pre programmed. I tried using your program to uload a later version of the software, but the programmer will not talk to the board. The processor on the board is a tmega 328P processor. It says connecting, but no upload of data. On the Bascam site it uses AVRdude or Xloader, so it must work I selectd Uno(ATmega328), but the upload will just not start, any pointers will be appreciated.
Hello just wanted to give you a quick heads up. The text in your post seem to be running off the screen in Internet explorer. I’m not sure if this is a format issue or something to do with web browser compatibility but I thought I’d post to let you know. The layout look great though! Hope you get the issue resolved soon.
Thanks Hello, i think that i saw you visited my site thus i came to “return the favor”.I am attempting to find things to improve my web site!I suppose its ok to use some of your ideas!! And on this post XLoader. I was actually moved enough to leave a thought 🙂 I actually do have a couple of questions for you if you tend not to mind. Is it simply me or do some of the remarks appear like they are coming from brain dead individuals? 😛 And, if you are writing on other online social sites, I’d like to keep up with everything fresh you have to post. Could you make a list all of all your social sites like your twitter feed, Facebook page or linkedin profile? Hi, this is probably a very dumb question but I am as green as they come when it comes to this kind of stuff.
I am trying to update the firmware on my simple bgc gimbal and I don’t understand how or where to find the hex file I need. I mean I know where the file is it’s on Simplebgc.com and I know which version I want to update to but when I click on the hex file it give a bunch of numbers which I can’t copy into the hex field of xloader. When I click the button next to the hex box in xloader it has me looking on my computer for this hex file. Again I’m sorry for the stupid question but how do I get the hex file, or what part of the hex file do I need to enter into the field so I can update my gimbal.
Thanks so much in advance! This is a nice little program! I especially like that you’ve included the arguments to avrdude in the.txt file, which lets you expand it later without needing to rewrite it.

Here are a couple of tips for those commenting: 1. There is a “devices.txt” file in the program’s working directory. This text file contains the names of the boards, the processor types, the bootloader protocol, and the baud rate for programming. Example: Uno(ATmega328);m328p;stk500;57600; To program an Arduino Leonardo, you need to do some extra work. Add the following line to devices.txt: Leonardo(32U4);atmega32U4;avr109;57600 Then replace avrdude.exe and avrdude.conf with the ones from the latest Arduino IDE. You’ll also need to change any instances of “stk500” in devices.txt to “stk500v1,” and you’ll need to put the Leonardo in bootloader mode before starting the upload.
You can do this pretty easily by toggling the reset line low (just press the button!) on the Leo before uploading. Perhaps in a future version, the author can add in the Leonardo trick – open the COM port at 1200 baud and then close it again. That resets the AVR and puts it bootloader mode for 8 seconds. Thank you for the helpful application.
I think it would be nice to have two copies configured for different boards/COM ports when working on a project involving two or more devices. I see that the program stores its settings in the registry, thus each copy will overwrite the settings for the other ones when restarted. Would it be possible to add a switch enabling the program to store settings in a file in its working directory? This way I could have as many copies as I want. Alternatively you could provide command line options for all the settings. I could also implement it myself if you were so kind to release the source code. Hi Im currently using xloader for development work, with a Mega2560 The final design will use the same micro but an FTDI chip for the comms interface rather than the atmel device on Mega2560 Would you consider releasing the source for xloader so that I can modify it to work with the reset that I will be providing via the FTDI chip.
(The design is for use in a research environment only – not commercial) Alternatively could you tell me if Xloader will still work (in principle) if (- rather than using the ‘automatic reset’ as implemented on the mega2560) I change the release delay in the boot loader to give time to operate a manual reset button? Thank You for the awesome program! Question: can your program pulse the DTR line or whatever on the FTDI chip right before it uploads? The reason is, due to the location of the arduino (deep inside my engine bay) it is A LOT of work to get the arduino to reset. I believe the arduino IDE pulses this line before, and after the upload. It would be AWESOME if you can do that and if you do, please email me a donation link so i can show my appreciation 🙂 fwiw, I am also interested in the mega 2560 beta, as i’m about to start using those now that the mega1280 is not available 🙂.
